James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden
Black River, Wisconsin

These photos were taken in 2009 at the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden, located in Black River, Wisconsin. Tellen began work on the sculpture garden in 1942, at age 62, and continued until his death in 1957. The site is currently maintained by the Kohler foundation, and is open to the public. It is a lovely site located near lake Michigan just south of Shepoygan, and makesĀ  for a great outing. The atmosphere of the site is very peaceful and serene, and the work represents a range of subjects and themes, from playful to more serious, with some of the figurative work representing great emotional depth, as well as artistic sophistication. The work has an incredible liveliness and realism, especially given that it is executed in concrete. The work Tellen left behind here is clearly the work of a wonderfully gifted artist. A short bio of Tellen, and directions to the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden is available on the Kohler Center website here: http://www.kohlerfoundation.org/tellen_bio.html
